The objective of the research described herein was to
review and analyze the concepts,relationships,and
techniques of materials management in manufacturing
for two purposes:to assist in formalizing that in
construction;and to assess the available detailed
techniques for application in project environment.To

struction materials management literature was thor-

designs and constructs its own major projects.With
regard to the?rst purpose stated above,some main
results of this endeavour contributed to the develop-
ment of a conceptual knowledge-based model of the
project materials management process[12].This paper
focuses on the second purpose.It presents the key?nd-
ings of the research conducted to explore the systems
that have been developed for planning and controlling
manufacturing materials for the design of that needed
for managing materials in large or complex projects.
