In the past times punishment usually was very severe. As the society develops, leniency is more and more accepted. To contrary of severe punishment, it is the new destination of punishment and an effective meaning to stop crime. Some scholars argue that we should show leniency to even most ruthless criminals and abolish capital sentence. However, as for time being, it is too early. Because then it will not be effective to deliver the message to potential criminals. Therefore, we should show our leniency cautiously and keep the existing tough sentences as a suppliment. Meanwhile, make sure the necessity of punishment. This is the way to prevent crimes.
