1. In China, I think there are some evident differences between families in the countryside and the city. Families in the countryside are more likely to have more than just one child, while those in the city usually are one-child families. In China, though the birth-control policy is very strict and only allows one or two children begot in one family, it works less effectively in the countryside than in the city. Because country people strongly believe that the more kids they have, the happier life they would live at their old age.
2. Since they are not able to make big changes of the family financial situation, parents in the countryside usually pay a lot of expectations on their children, hoping they will have good scores at school and get a well-paid job in the office upon their graduation. They know well enough about the harshness of a peasant life, and want their children to live a much better life. However, parents in the city usually don't have such eager for their children. Since most of the families only have one child and the parents are usually salarymen and salarywomen, they are able to raise the child with benigh education and support them much easilier than those in the countryside. Therefore, it's not even a news to hear of some parents in the city send their children to study abroad. But it would be a surprising shock to hear that countryside kids go to study abroad if without the scholarship offered by the government.
3. Maybe some people would take it a yes to this question, but in my opinion, I'm afraid that I've got to say that I don't think divorce gives people greater freedom. I think divorce only gives vacancy in one's life. Yes, if you're divorced, you'll have all the freedom to hang out as late as you want, nobody will boss around, questioning where you've been to. But at the same time, no one will take care of you when you're ill. And no one will be there for you, either, when you need someone to talk to. A friend might be good for the situation, but it's always a lot better when it's someone intimate with you.
4. In China, grandparents have all the time to be around with grandchildren when parents have to go to work for bread-earning, which makes up for the void of parenting and would also work for increasing the intimacy with grandchildren.
5. I think Chinese grandparents, since they usually live together within the family, are likely to spend more time with their grandchildren than those in the UK. Because it's a tradition in China for grandparents to be with grandchildren and help the parents to look after the little ones in the family. But so far as I know, most of the western grandparents don't live with the family. And they would only pay visit to the family from time to time, just for some specail occasions. All in all, I think it's a difference between different cultures.
