关于英语完成时态的问题

这是新概念第二册第九课一片课文"On wednesday evening,we went to the Town Hall.It was the last day of the year and a large crowd of people had gathered under the town hall clock".现在我主要不懂里面的时态问题，就算我把这句话改成"On wednesday evening,we had gone to the Town Hall.It was the last day of the year and a large crowd of people gathered under the town hall clock",就是两个时态变了，说的意思不是一样吗？

On wednesday evening就限定了你必须用过去式，过去式和过去完成时的区别就在于过去式只是在描述过去发生的事情，而过去完成时是在强调过去发生的那件事对之后的影响。可以简单的吧完成时翻译成“已经”，这也能够就容易多了。
至于你后面改的那个，doesn't make any sense.

在第一句话中，有一个明显的时间状语：On Wednesday evening, 在这种情况下，只能用过去时。后面的句子中之所以用了过去完成时，是因为 had gathered 是在我们到达（went to) 这个动作之前发生的，也就是我们所说的“过去的过去", 这时必须用过去完成时。又如：
When we got to the cinema, the film had already begun. 到达got to是过去时，在这个过去时之前发生的动作就要用过去完成时。
