Oneafternoon,mysonAdamaskedme,“Areallpeoplethesameeveniftheyaredifferentincolor?”Itho...
One afternoon, my son Adam asked me, “Are all people the same even if they are different in color?”
I thought for a minute, and then I said, “I’ll explain, if you can just wait until we make a quick stop at the grocery store. I have something interesting to show you.”
At grocery store, we bought some apples --- red, green and yellow ones. Back home, I told Adam, “It’s time to answer your question.” I put one apple of each type on the table. Then I looked at Adam, who had a curious look on his face.
“People are like apples. They come in all different colors, shapes and sizes. On the outside, some of the apples may not even lood as the others.” As I was talking, Adam was examining each one carefully.
Then, I took each of the apples and peeled(削皮)them, placing them back on the table, but in a different place.
“Okay, Adam, tell me which is which..”
He said, “I can’t tell. They all look same now.” “Take a bite of each one . See if that helps you decide which one is which.”
He took big bites , and then a huge smile came cross his face..”People are just like apples! They are all different, but once you take off the outside, they’re pretty much the same on the inside.”
He toally got it. I didn’t need to say or do anything else.
I used to live selfishly, I should admit. But one moment changed me.
I was on my lunch break and had left the office to ger something to eat . On the way, I saw a
Busker(街头艺人),with a hat in front of him. I had some coins in my pocker, but I would not give them to him, thinking to myself he would only use the money to feed his addiction to drugs or alcohol. He looked like that type-young and ragged. But what was I going to spend the money on ? Only to feed my addiction to Coca-Cola or chocolate! I then realized I had no right to place myself above him just because he was busking.
I stopped and dropped all the coins into his hat and he smiled at me, I watched for a while. As selfish as it sounds, I expected something more to come from that moment—a feeling of happeiness or satifaction, for example. But nothing happened Disappointedly, I walked off. “It proved to be a waste of money ,”I thought.
On my way home at the end of the day, I saw the busker again and he was packing up . I watched him pick up the hat and walk to a cafe counter. There he poured the total contents into a tin collecting for an earthquake fund-raising(募捐) event. He was busking for charity(慈善)!
Now I donate any change I have to charity tins and enjoy the feeling of giving.
