For efficient operation of numerically controlled machine tools it is essential that the correct tools are available at the time required. There are a number of tool changing arrangements, which can be classified into three main types: manual, turret and magazine.
Work holders
The work holders generally used are: chucks; vices; pallets, subtables or fixtures; and grid plates.
There are two main types of chucks used: three-jaw chucks and collet chucks. Chucks with three self-centering jaws are commonly used on turning centers and are capable of holding work with a wide range of size. Collet chucks are widely used on turning centers. The individual collets can only accommodate a limited variation in the size of work. Collet chucks hold the work accurately and efficiently and can be programmed to be operated automatically as required.
A stepped jaw vice is one of the easiest methods of holding work that is to be manually loaded on drilling and milling machines. One of the limitations in the use of vices is that the maximum work size is dependent on the amount of jaw opening and the width of the jaws.
A pallet is a block of steel or more usually cast iron of the order of 400mm square by100mm thick. The sides of the pallets are machined square to known size, and have slots for the holding bolts on the machine table. Pallets are located on the machine table with dowel pins. Pallets are useful for holding components that are heavy or of complex shape, and where positioning of them on the machine table can be a problem.
A subtable is of similar size to a pallet, but in addition the underside of the subtable is machined to a form that can be transferred on to a mating form on the machine. There are machines with rotary six-station automatic work changer. The particular work is selected by the computer in the control unit as required to programmed instructions. Work which has had all the machining operations completed has to be removed manually. The use of subtables is particularly beneficial in flexible manufacturing systems (FMS), and if the machine is part of a DNC (direct numerical control) system the components are loaded on to the subtables at a work loading station away from the machine.
A fixture can be mounted on pallets or on the work tables. A common application of a fixture is when the components to be machined have bores that have been previously machined. This type of component can be located on a round plug of the requisite size which is clamped to the fixture. The plug can be changed for the different size bores in the work. 展开
