Nearly three-quarters of adult Americans believe it is important or very important to speak a second language, according to a Sunday newspaper survey (调查).
The most popular second language was Spanish, studied by 54 per cent, and French, studied by 34 per cent. Latin and German followed with 11 per cent and 9 per cent.
The most popular way to learn a second language was living where a language is spoken (33 per cent), teaching oneself with a book (30 per cent), listening to tapes (24 per cent), taking private lessons (11 per cent), and using an electronic translator (6 per cent).
The vast majority (多数), 87 per cent of answer-sheets said they believe it was “never too late” to learn a second language, the CNN/US News found.
