I have sometimes thought that the existence of calculators and computers gives
modern students an advantage because the calculations that calculus explains have
become easy to do. At other times I think modern students regard calculation

calculation cuts them off from the kind of thinking needed to understand calculus.
Seeing what Euler did and expected his readers to consider doing in the way of
calculation makes me think that the second view is the correct one. You have to

我有时会觉得计算器和电脑的存在给了现代学生极大的优势,因为他们不用再为微积分所要求的那些的计算工作所烦扰了。但从另一方面我又会想,这样一来现代学生就会把计算单纯地看做一种机械任务,便会缺少一些非常关键的思维方式而难以真正理解微积分。当我看到Euler所做的工作和他对读者以算术的方式解决问题的期盼时,我便开始偏向于我的第二种观点了。毕竟我们学会了走才可能会跑——可要是我一直坐在车里呢?!(笑)
