Sometimes we don't actually mean what we said literally. For example, when we say "have you had your dinner?", we actually don't mean to ask whether you had your dinner or not, but it's only a way of greeting.

Sometimes the literal meaning of our words is inconsistent with the real meaning of the words. For eaxmple:" have you eaten" in Chinese does not ask whether you have had meals but is a way of greeting.
