For production operations, a vital requirement for allowing prompt implementation of stimulation measures is the early detection of salt precipitation on the basis of simple criteria. As shown by experience in practice, a consideration of the productivity index of gas wells is not sufficient for the detection of plugging by salt precipitates. The subsequent stimulation measures have frequently proved to be too late for restoring the original flow conditions. The interpretation of the ionic distribution in the entrained reservoir water during production may provide a useful indication for early detection. From the evaporation of sea water during the formation of the saliniferous successions of the Zechstein, the variation of the concentration of dissolved ions in the brines during the various deposition sequences has been known for many years [Carpenter, 1978]. The reservoir water which was entrained by the gas produced from a selected well was evaporated under controlled conditions until crystallization of the dissolved salts. Water samples were taken during evaporation and analyzed to determine their chemical composition. The ionic concentration and the respective density of the brine were thus determined. In combination with a visual inspection of the resulting salt precipitates, this analysis can indicate the presence of inorganic scale in the reservoir and in the well. For considering the condensation of water in the tubing during production, quotients have been computed for cations or anions, or both. Special attention has been paid to the variation of these quotients as a function of the brine density, as well as the dependence of the quotients on processes of dissolution and precipitation of salt observed during the visual inspection. The purpose of these quotients is to indicate the time of salt precipitation by means of a significant change in value. For this purpose, it is assumed that the quotient is constant at the time of total dissolution, regardless of the density, but varies decidedly at the time of initial precipitation.
