According to legend, the farmer Wilheilm Tell lived in 1300s in Switzerland. He was a great fighter for freedom. One day he came to Altdorf with his son Walter.
On the market place in Altdorf, the governor Gessler had put up a pole with a hat. Every passersby must greet the hat. Tell went across the place without greeting the hat. He was arrested immediately. The governor Gessler was very happy, because finally he was able to punish someone.
The governor Gessler put an apple on the head of little Walter. Tell should shoot the arrow to the apple on the head. If he did shoot the apple, then he could be free. Tell had great fear, but he shot well. He shot right the apple and his son remained alive. Later Tell killed Gessler in Vierwaldstättersee. the legend that the fighter of freedom from Switzeland was against Austrian then began.
