Nineteen Eighty-Four is George Orwell's representative allegorical science-fiction work, written in 1948 and published in 1949. The book described a smothering future totalitarian society which takes pursuit of power as its ultimate goal. Through a depiction of an average man in the society, the book casts the the nature of totalitarianism in real life. It is regarded, together with the British writer T. H. Huxley's "Brave New World" and the Russian writer I. V. Zamyatin's "We", as the three greatest anti-utopian works and is generally considered as a representative work of political novel literature. "Nineteen Eighty-Four" has been translated into more than 60 languages and has made its impact on the English language itself. The expressions derived from the book have become common expressions used in discussions of privacy as well as national security issues. For instance, "Orwellian" is used to describe totalitarian behaviors or orginazations, while "Big brother is watching you" stands for any surveillance that infringes on privacy. The book was rated as one of the top 100 English novels since 1923 and was adapted into a movie in 1984.
