This could be either electrical, mechanical or other forms of energy. However, in many applications, electrical energy, such as that supplied from an electrical generator, is found to be most appropriate. Energy storage can be done in many different ways. Energy can be stored in mechanical spring and flywheels, compressed gas, electric field (capacitors), magnetic field (inductors), electrochemical battery and so on. Among these techniques, electrical energy stored in capacitors bank and Marx generator are two of the most widely used capacitive devices for such purpose. Both are made of a large number of high voltage capacitors and these capacitors are charged (accumulating energy) in parallel configurations. During discharge (releasing energy), the configuration of the former remains unchanged but the latter changes to series connection. Thus a Marx generator not only serves as an energy but also functions as a voltage multiplier, whereas a capacitor’s bank can only serve as an energy storage. Transformation of the stored static energy into pulsed form is usually done by means of a switch between the energy store and the next section. Upon closing the switch the stored energy is transformed into a high power of pulsed form.
The pulse shape of the power is closely related to the performance of the switch. Requirements on the switch in such applications are rather stringent. Firstly, the switch must be able to withhold high voltages before closing. Secondly upon triggering, it must instantly react and transfer itself from a perfect insulator into a good conductor. Finally it must have the ability to recover from a conducting for stage isolation, energy transmission and pulse forming, etc. As mentioned before, the performance of the entire system is closely related to the characteristics and capability of the switches employed.
