The attraction of an industry is the essential factor that affects the profits the firm can obtain. Porter pointed out in Competitive Advantage that, not all industries offer the equal profit opportunity, the first and basic factor that determines the level of profits is industry attraction, and the relative competitive position in an industry is on the second place. An industry without enough attraction results in what Porter calls “stack in the middle” and do not enable the firm to gain average market profits.
The analysis of industry attraction is the starting point of the business choice process for a corporation from the risk and profits aspect. As a standard of business choice, Porter introduced three basic tests for diversification based on industry attraction:
The attraction test: the industry is structurally attractive, or may become an attractive one.
The coat-of-entry test: the cost of entry will not erode the profits in the future.
The better-off test: the corporation provides competitive advantage for the new business unit, while the new business unit increases competitive advantage for the corporation at the same time.
