The difference betwween a literal (直译) translation and a contextual translation(意译):

A literal translation is a word for word translation between two languages, and hence the word "literal". A literal translation gives a straight translation for every word that has been used in a sentence, and does not necessarily make the final translated product correct, or correspond to what the sentence actually means. A contextual translation, however, does the exact opposite. It translates what the sentences means but does not necessarily translate the sentence word for word. A contextual translation is much more preferred because a literal translation does not make any sense, while a contextual translation tells you what the sentence really means.
