对一句话的翻译不太懂

We are even farther removed from the unfocused newspaper reviews published in England between the turn of the 20th century and the eve of World War 2, at a time when newsprint was dirt-cheap and stylish arts criticism was considered an ornament to the publications in which it appeared.

书上给的翻译：从20世纪初到二战前夕，在英国出版的无特定目标的报刊评论会更加让我们有迥然不同的感觉，当时，新闻用纸很便宜，而且人们认为时尚的艺术评论是对出版物的一种装饰

我不太懂的地方有两点，第一个“让我们有迥然不同的感觉”是怎么翻译出来的，我知道可能是意译，但是怎么也意会不出这个感觉来，要是按原句定位应该是与"farther removed"对应的，请问这个是怎么体会出来的意思？
还有一个是句末的"in which it appeared"直译是，在它出现时，虽然说翻译中给隐去了，不过我想知道一下，它指代的是出现时，是出版物么？直译是：时尚的艺术评论在出版物出现的时候被认为是对出版物的一种装饰
这样直译对么？
