A freak accident meant I was going to be without a car for quite some time. Not a huge drama for most, but I had a baby to cart around, and two other children to get to school in a week's time, including my daughter who was starting pre-school.
It was the school holidays, and I felt trapped and isolated, trying to entertain all three, without a car to take them anywhere. Public transport was an option, but the logistics of getting a pram on a tram and fitting in around the baby's sleeps rendered this almost impossible. It seemed easier to stay at home, although the natives were getting very restless!
In passing, I relayed my tale of woe to one of the school mums. She kindly offered to take my two oldest children for a day. Not only that, but when school time rolled around, she was only too willing to help with the pick-up and drop-off, even though it was out of the way for her. All this from a mum who has not one, not two, not three, but four of her own children to ferry around! Nothing was too much trouble.
During this period, another of the mums was able to lend me a car she was trying to sell, knowing I would have messy children in it as well as the baby. I didn't have it all the time, but when I did it was a life-saver, and made shopping and getting the children to their after school activities so much easier.
These acts of kindness were from the heart. Nothing was expected in return and I was never made to feel that I was inconveniencing either of them.
