What might happen? This should not replace instruction in the word-level reading skills, such as decoding and vocabulary development, but rather complement it. In the end, we suspect that learning to read in a foreign language is very similar to learning to read in the native language. A very important part of the reading acquisition process is learning to build large, rich, complex, flexible, and interesting models of the meaning of the text.
