严复为什么用文言文翻译

最近读书，书中说严复曾讲：“if people who had not read the Chinese classics were to read his translations, they would not understand them, but that was the fault of the readers and the translator is not to blame" 谁知道这句话的原来用中文是怎么讲的吗？是要严复的原话，不是要翻译。
