求分析一个英语句子。！

Researchers found that people become happier and experience less worry after they reach the age of fifty. In fact, they say by the age of eighty-five, people are happier with their life than they were when they were eighteen years old.
按照语法分析。这一句“than they were when they were eighteen years old” 里的“when they were ”是不是多余？可是原文就是这样写的。

不多余，这里的when they were指代的是they were happier，与前面的people are happier相呼应。后面的when they were eighteen years old是时间状语，没有问题，其实比较级结构出现一般都可省略一部分，其实完整的是这样的: "people are happier with their life than they were happy with their life when they were eighteen years old。
再给你举个例子： you are happier than i am（省略happy）。
