In any event, the financial strains that the rebate cuts will impose on weaker companies are likely to act as a further force for consolidation; in this respect at least, the policy`s impact should be beneficial for China`s competitiveness
Reducing China`s dependence on exports is also part of a larger strategy to rebalance the economy towards a more consumption-driven growth model, and to direct capital investment towards more advanced manufacturing and services industries. In the long run these structural changes would render China less vulnerable to a global slow down, while insulating the economy from the risk of a protectionist backlash in the US or elsewhere.
