Instances of the adverse effects of naturally occurring carbonaceous
material in mineral processing has been documented
elsewhere. For example, reduction in gold recovery during cyanide
leaching of gold concentrates due to adsorption of dissolved gold
onto carbonaceous material has been observed (Adams and Burger,
1998; Pyke et al., 1999; Allan and Woodcock, 2001). Hence, attempts
were made to depress carbonaceous material using sodium
naphthalene sulphonate during flotation of gold bearing sulphide
minerals, in order to eliminate or reduce its presence in the cyanidation
stage (Pyke et al., 1999). Similarly, a 60/40 mixture of dextrin
and naphthalene disulphonate was used at the copper
concentrator at Mt. Isa, in order to depress iron sulphide gangue
minerals coated with hydrophobic graphitic carbon (Grano et al.,
1991). In both cases, limited improvements were obtained due to
undesirable depression of valuable minerals at higher concentrations
of depressant.
