I have been lucky enough to visit London monthly for the past while and I’ve tried to stay at different accommodation each time – usually for just a night or two. My January 2010 visit required a longer London stay and I booked a room at Sofitel St. James for 4 nights.

The Sofitel St. James is certainly well-located; right on the Piccadilly and Bakerloo lines so very accessible. You can have the serenity of St. James Park or the bustle of Piccadilly Circus as you wish.

My stay was at the conclusion of some time in Cambridge so I took (my first) black cab ride from Kings Cross Rail Station to the hotel. It was drizzling upon my arrival and the doorman was assisting me out of the cab, umbrella in hand, before I knew that we’d even stopped. I had booked a standard room, but found that I had been upgraded to a small suite that was roomy by London standards and very comfortable. Everything was impeccably clean, crisp and well-appointed. There was free wireless in the room. The bath had a separate tub and shower stocked with lovely toiletries, a fluffy robe and decadent towels. The furnishings were of the highest quality and good thought went into storage so that everything tucks away neatly. There is a good gym and a really nice touch was having walking/jogging maps in the suite (as I’ve been eating my way through London too). I should also note that past reviewers’ comments about the bed and bedding are absolutely true. Amazingly comfortable.

I’ve never stayed at Sofitel hotel before and was momentarily taken aback to be spoken to in French at reception. Of course, I should have expected it. I soon learned that most of the employees were French (or at least spoke it fluently). I spoke French to all of them from that point on – and while I don’t know if that influenced the situation – it seemed that they could not do enough for me. For example, soon after getting to my room a lovely bowl of nuts and a demi of champagne were delivered for me to enjoy. I unexpectedly needed to execute some documents and staff happily faxed them back and forth for me with no charges. There was a kettle and a lovely selection of teas in my suite but when staff noted that I hadn’t used any, I confessed that I was not a tea drinker (I prefer coffee). I returned to find an espresso machine for my enjoyment (and I did – I was pretty wired for the rest of the stay!) Most impressive – I retired to the hotel one evening to find that I had dragged the belt to my coat through the slushy streets of London (having shut it in the car door - my own clumsiness entirely). The doorman noticed my coat, whisked it away, had it laundered and returned to my suite for the next morning. Incredible service and attention to detail.
