Melanie's school matched student volunteers with people who needed help. Melanie enjoyed reading to Mrs Taylor.
When Melanie arrived, Mrs Taylor handed her a letter to read. Melanie read it quickly and said, "It's from your niece Amanda. She's coming by bus next Friday.
On Friday Melanie headed for Mrs Taylor's house. She rang the doorbell. "You must be Melanie," said a smiling girl. "I'm Amanda. I've heard so much about you!" They both talked at once and laughed.
Amanda took Melanie to the backyard where Mrs Taylor stood looking sadly at her garden. It did look rather messy.
"Maybe we could fix it up," Melanie suggested, "if you don't mind."
"Mind? I'd love it!" Mrs Taylor said.
Then they spent the rest of the day working in the garden.
Back home that night, Melanie was too excited to sleep. "I'm glad I read to Mrs Taylor," she thought. "Now I have two new friends." The summer looked a lot more promising than it had earlier that week.
